Kalam plumps for Narayana Murthy

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: Having Chief Mentor of Infosys N.R. Narayana Murthy as the next President of India is a " fantastic" idea, according to President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.

Mr. Kalam's observations on Mr. Narayana Murthy's candidature for the post of President came while he was fielding queries from trainee employees of Infosys.

Mr. Narayana Murthy, however, sought to play down the speculation over his candidature for the highest office in the country. "I think it is all hyped," he told reporters later.

When his attention was drawn to Mr. Kalam's favourable opinion of him as the future President, he said the President had always been kind to him. "He has blessed me and my wife. I am grateful to him."

On whether he would take up the matter with political parties, he said, "No, not at all."

Instead, he suggested that Mr. Kalam be given a second term.

He described the President as a "wonderful human being."
