KOLKATA: Orissa thrashed Assam by 102-runs to finish second behind Bengal in the East Zone Twenty20 tournament which concluded at the Eden Gardens here on Sunday. Bengal defeated Tripura by four wickets to emerge with an all-win record. Put into to bat, Orissa piled up 196 for four in 20 overs with opener Paresh Patel and No. 3 Niranjan Behera hitting up half centuries. Sizeable contributions from P. Jayachandra (30) and R.R. Das (30) bolstered the Orissa total. Assam, which had lost all its previous matches, lost five wickets for just 38 in eight overs. From there on, it could never recover fully and was bowled out for 94 in 19.3 overs. In another match, Tripura scored 133 for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs after electing to bat. Biswajit Dey (30) and Manoj Singh (34) defied the Bengal attack in which Ranadeb Bose starred with three for 33. Laxmi Ratan Shukla chipped in with two wickets for 15 runs. Bengal ran into trouble losing four quick wickets for 35 in seven overs. Shukla, coming in at No.5, changed the complexion of the game with some lusty hitting to score 76 off 42 balls with six 4s and four 6s to help Bengal win by four wickets with 12 balls to spare.
The scores: Orissa 196 for four in 20 overs (P. Patel 51, N. Behera 55) bt Assam 94 in 19.3 overs (G. Sharma 34, N. Behera three for 16). Tripura 133 for seven in 20 overs (B. Dey 32, M. Singh 34, R. Bose three for 33) lost to Bengal 134 for six in 18 overs (L.R. Shukla 76).
