VISAKHAPATNAM: Commissioner of Service Tax in Central Board of Excise and Customs, New Delhi, Gautam Bhattacharya, underlined the importance of feedback for refining the provisions of law to ensure minimum litigation and maximum compliance. Presiding over the 14th seminar on `budget 2007' organised by the Tax Law Research Group in association with taxindiaonline.com here on Saturday, he said that service tax was a levy, which has come to stay. He expressed the view that in the years to come, even unknown services were likely to be taxed.
Website services
Citing an example, he said that if a contract gives an exclusive jurisdiction for one franchisee for not providing services in that area, even such activity was likely to come under the purview of the service tax in future. He appreciated the services of the website taxindiaonline.com for providing various services to assesses and alerting them in reducing the grey areas of taxation. Managing Editor of taxindiaonline.com Shailendra Kumar said that the law should not be static but should keep changing to meet the requirements of the day. He felt it was the duty of every individual to make a detailed study of taxation laws for best compliance with maximum advantage. Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise (appeals), Visakhapatnam, P.N. Rao, called for understanding of the statutes. Government expects collection of taxes that were due and any attempt to collect less or more should be discouraged at all levels, he said. Editor-in-Chief of taxindiaonline.com Vijay K. Kumar spoke about the website and its utility. Advocate and convener of Tax Law Research Group G. Prabhakara Sastry, advocate S. Jai Kumar of Swamy Associates, Chennai, and Appraiser of Customs, Visakhapatnam, J.N. Kishore, spoke.
