Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) is celebrating Kodava New Year on April 14, its secretary-general N.U. Nachappa has said. Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Nachappa said Kodava men and women, attired in traditional costumes, would take out a procession from General Thimmaiah Circle to the Cauvery Hall, venue of the celebrations. Kodava folk programmes will be held there later. The New Year will coincide with the beginning of the `Edamyar' month in the Kodava calendar. The celebrations were aimed at reiterating the CNC's major demands that include carving out of a Codava Autonomous Region (CAR) on the lines of Gorkha Hill Council; providing constitutional guarantee for Kodava language, culture and heritage; inclusion of Kodava `takk'(language) in the VIII Schedule of the Constitution; and extending reservation to Kodavas as an ethno-lingual group and primitive tribe. Mr. Nachappa said that the memorandums sent to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, urging them to consider CNC's demands on February 21, had been acknowledged by their offices. They had been forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs for further action. Mr. Nachappa told Kodava people in Virajpet not to get involved in trouble that led to group clashes in the town a few days ago. They should avoid associating themselves with anti-social elements. Creating disharmony among communities and showing hatred was never a Kodava trait, he said.
