Alleged conspiracy to rid Dow Chemicals of liabilities

NEW DELHI: Members of the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal on Monday claimed to have "unearthed'' letters obtained through the Right to Information Act that reveal an alleged conspiracy between American multinational Dow Chemical, Indian industrialist Ratan Tata and key Indian officials to rid Dow Chemical of liabilities arising from its subsidiary Union Carbide's activities in Bhopal.

"The letters also reveal Dow's private fears that the Bhopal issue will derail its Indian expansion plans,'' said Rashida Bi of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmachari Sangh at a press conference here.

Releasing the letters to the Press, Ms. Bi added: "In an apparent effort to subvert the ongoing legal process, Dow CEO Andrew Liveris wrote on November 8, 2006, to the US Ambassador in India asserting that before Dow would consider further investment in India, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers should withdraw its application for a financial deposit against remediation costs of the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal.''
