HONOUR: Shrikaanth K. Murthy received this year's sangeethapriya.org award.
Bangalore: Shrikaanth K. Murthy of Bangalore, practising as a psychiatrist in the United Kingdom, has been chosen for this year's award by sangeethapriya.org for his contribution to Carnatic music through his writings and lecdems as well as his compositions. The award ceremony was organised recently at the St. Andrews Church Hall in Maidstone, Kent, U.K. Dr. Murthy's first guru was his mother who continues to train many youngsters in Basaveshvaranagar here. He is also a composer, even composed kritis in Sanketi, his mother tongue, besides Kannada, Sanskrit and Tamil. Some of them have been published with notations and audio (rendered by him and his wife Sahana) on the internet. A polyglot and linguist, Dr. Murthy has composed in all the 36 shuddha madhyama asampurna melas plus several pratimadhyama melas as well. He has also dealt with themes such as philosophy, sangita sastra, contemporary themes and sringara, as well as autobiographical themes. He is a prolific writer on Carnatic music and has contributed regularly to the Kannada music journal "Ananya Abhivyakti." A graduate from Bangalore Medical College, he lives in Maidstone along with his musician wife Sahana and son Pruthvi.
