Thiruvananthapuram
The heavy showers which lashed the city on Monday evening flooded the East Fort area, leaving vehicles and commuters stranded. Commuters at the city bus stand had to wade through the filthy water to board buses. Many vehicles had to be pushed to safe ground as their engines stalled while struggling to manoeuvre through the rising stormwaters. Motorists were desperately cleaning up spark plugs and trying to dry out flooded exhaust pipes in a bid to get their vehicles running. As the stormwaters started draining away, the entire road was covered with a thick layer of slippery black muck. Despite warning from local people, several pedestrians lost their footing and fell into the filthy mess. The flood made a mockery of the reconstruction of the culvert across the canal at Pazhavangady. Traders and residents in the area have been on the warpath against what they term an `unscientific' flood control project that has served no purpose other than wasting public money.
