A creation on display
Clay, the oldest and the most versatile material known to man, comes alive in the hands of four potters who are now showcasing their works at The Shrine Gallery in Delhi's upmarket Friends Colony. The potters of "Studio Six" have come together for a show that encompasses installations with objects of utility and art. Potters Monica-Claire Grewal, Neera Makhija, Suparna Surana and Avi Sanghi have used clay and other minerals in their own unique way to express their thoughts, ideas and tastes. They have also made use of luminous colours to breathe their individuality into the work. All of them pursue this art form for the sheer pleasure of it. Stonewear clay has been used by the potters to carve out different objects on wheels. Some of the items are hand-made. Speaking about the ongoing exhibition, Monica says: "All the other three participants are my students who are now potters in their own right. We are showcasing big platters, wall hangings, candleholders, Japanese fans and masks. Before creating pottery items in India, I was at Sir John Cass School of Art, City of London Polytechnic, where I was taught pottery under the strict guidance of experienced teachers for four years. Next three years, the institution allowed me to freelance. Later I came back to India and started my own studio." While Monica has installed a "garden'' of ceramic flowers and foliage, Neera's rhythmic composition of wind chimes make an interesting ceiling installation. Suparna focuses on innovative form for her lighting options and Avi's contribution to the show is a configuration of ceramic wall collages. The Shrine Gallery, which earlier went by the name of Art n' Soul Gallery, will display these artistic creations up to this Thursday. -- Madhur Tankha
