Concern over rise in crime

Legislators seek enforcement of Goondas Act to check crime

Puducherry: Members of different political parties sought enforcement of the Goondas Act in the Union Territory.

Participating in the debate on demands for grants to a number of departments including `Police and Jails` in the Assembly on Tuesday, R.Rajaraman (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) said Puducherry was witnessing one murder a week and heinous crimes were taking place on main thoroughfares.

He said his constituency (Embalam) had been free from crimes, but now the `knife culture' had taken roots. The police should act with utmost vigil and nab the accused.

S. P. Sivakumar (DMK) said there should be no delay in promoting the police personnel.

He said there was every need enforce Goondas Act in Puducherry.

Leader of the Opposition A M H Nazeem (DMK) said steps should be taken to fill the post of a Minister now lying vacant. Normally, the total strength of the Ministry here would be six. But there were only five Ministers now. He said voters were facing practical difficulties in getting the electoral photo identity cards as they were virtually running from pillar to post to get the cards.

Mr. Nazeem said convicts undergoing life term in the prison here should be granted remission of sentences and a committee should be formed to go into the matter.

A. Anbalagan (AIADMK) said while appointing three nominated legislators, the government should ensure that all the three posts were earmarked for women and that they were apolitical.

He said that increase in crimes had been a matter of concern. Thefts were a common and routine occurrence in the municipal bus terminus here.

R. K. R. Anandaraman (PMK) said that Tamil should be used as official language. He sought enforcement of Goondas Act.
