Faces extortion case

Haroon Habib

Sheikh Hasina

DHAKA: Sheikh Hasina, former Prime Minister and president of the Awami League, was sued in an extortion case involving taka 3 crore. The graft case was filed on Monday under a non-bailable section of the penal code. It alleged that she extorted the money from a businessman to approve a barge-mounted power plant during her premiership in 1998. The complaint was lodged by Tajul Islam Faruq, chairman of the Westmont Bangladesh Limited, a Malaysian-owned company. Sheikh Hasina is on a private tour in the U.S.

She was quoted by the local media as terming the case "a big conspiracy" and that she would soon return home and challenge it.
