NIZAMABAD: Twenty Telugu Desam Party (TDP) workers were injured on Tuesday when the Maharashtra police lathicharged them after they tried to force their way towards the controversial Babli project site on the inter-State border, near Dharmabad. TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu rushed here from Hyderabad to console the injured party workers admitted to hospital even as the TDP decided to hold protest rallies in Nizamabad, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Nalgonda on Wednesday. These five districts in the Telangana region will be adversely hit by the Babli project, now under construction. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy too condemned the lathicharge and expressed solidarity with the TDP's plan to hold protest rallies. Trouble began at Dharmabad when a number of slogan-shouting TDP workers reached the spot and tried to force their way to the Babli barrage site breaking police cordon. They arrived at the border in dozens of vehicles much before a team of party MLAs from Hyderabad reached the place as part of their plan to visit Babli. The Nanded district authorities had imposed Sec. 144 of the Cr. P. C. They hurled a stone on a waiting fire engine smashing its windscreen leading to trouble. The 2000-strong contingent of the Maharashtra police, drawn from the Rapid Action Force, Special Police Force, Special Commandos and civil police, then set upon the TDP workers.
