Two prohibition offenders held

TIRUCHI: The Prohibition and Enforcement Wing of the City Police arrested two persons on the charge of possession of illicit arrack here on Monday.

Those arrested were Raja (49) and Devi (30).

A total of five litres of illicit arrack were seized from their possession, the police said.

Cement idol washed ashore

Nagapattinam: An idol of Goddess Saraswathi, made of cement, was washed ashore at Keechankuppam, a coastal hamlet, two days ago.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 77.54 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 926 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 2,000 cusecs. — Special Correspondent

Man killed in accident

TIRUNELVELI: One person was killed and another injured when a two-wheeler dashed against a bus near here on Monday.

Police said that R. Thirunavukkarasu (42) of Ambasamudram and E. Subbiah (45) of Kallidaikurichi were going towards Ambasamudram on a two-wheeler. When they tried to overtake a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus proceeding from Nagercoil to Tenkasi, they met with an accident, in which Thirunavukkarasu, was killed on the spot.

Two injured

Tuticorin: Two persons were seriously injured when two motorbikes colided at Eral on Sunday.

The police said that S. Rajesh (24) and G. Arumugam (50) were admitted to Tuticorin Government Hospital with injuries.

Woman ends life

Tuticorin: A 48-year-old woman allegedly hanged herself to death at Athimarapatti near here on Monday. The police said that Bhagyam (48) was suffering from chronic ailments.

Youth killed

Tuticorin: A youth died after he fell off a motorcycle here on Monday.

The police said that J. Stalin (23) was travelling as pillion rider on a bike, which met with an accident on Tuticorin-Tirunelveli Highway.

Body recovered

Tuticorin: The body of a man aged about 65 years was found at Tirchendur near here on Monday.

The police have registered a case based on a complaint lodged by the Village Adminsitrative Officer of Tiruchendur. - Staff Reporter

Memorial for Srinivasa Rao

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday said steps would be taken to put up a memorial in memory of P. Srinivasa Rao, who fought for the rights of the poor and landless farmers in Thanjavur district. Mr. Karunandhi said on the occasion of his centenary, all should take a pledge to rededicate themselves to the upliftment of the poor. Responding to a question from V. Sivapunniyam, the Chief Minister said that he would discuss with the district collector and decide on the location of the memorial. — Special Correspondent

Slaughter of

deer denied

CHENNAI: The Vellore district forest administration has denied that a deer, rescued by villagers and handed over to forest officials, was slaughtered by the department personnel. In a counter-affidavit filed before the First Bench, comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice D. Murugesan, District Forest Officer K. Manickam said after the animal died of heat stroke post-mortem was conducted on it. A Forester, who had ordered the removal of its skin for preservation, has been placed under suspension. A Ranger had been charge sheeted. As for the public interest litigation petition filed by advocate G. Rajendran, alleging that the forest personnel had slaughtered the deer, the counter said it had been filed merely on the basis of media reports and without any verification of facts. On Tuesday, as directed by the court, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests appeared in court. The matter was adjourned to April 12. — Special Correspondent

High Court vacates stay on film release

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Tuesday vacated an interim stay on the release of Kamal Hassan-starrer, Dasavatharam. The order of stay was first granted on January 20 and extended from time to time till March 15. It was passed on a civil suit filed by an assistant director who claimed that he had handed over the story line to Kamal Hassan's office on an assurance that he would be appointed assistant director for the film with remuneration. On Tuesday, Justice V. Ramasubramanian vacated the stay, stating that the applicant could not furnish any proof to show that his story had been copied by the film crew. He also failed to prove that the film under production was a replication of his story. — Special Correspondent

Exam results

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR University has released the VIII semester examination results of BPT course. An official release said the results were available on university website tnmmu.ac.in. The examinations were held in February. — Special Correspondent.

Woman smuggling ganja into prison held

CUDDALORE: Warders in the Cuddalore Central Prison caught a woman named Selvi for passing on ganja hidden in a mixture packet to a convict Udhayakumar on Monday. The jail authorities later handed her over to the Old Town Police who had booked a case against her under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act. The jail sources said, claiming to be the sister-in-law of Udhayakumar, Selvi sought permission to meet him. When she was passing on the packet, the Warders inspected the packet and found the substance. — Special Correspondent
