AHMEDABAD:
It was a mixed bag for the Congress in the by-elections for seats to the municipalities and the district and taluka panchayats in Gujarat, the polling for which was held on Sunday. The counting of votes commenced on Tuesday.
The ruling BJP continued to demonstrate its stranglehold in the urban areas wiping out the Congress. The party claimed 12 of the 16 seats in various municipalities with the remaining four being won by Independents and the Congress coming a cropper.
The Congress, however, showed much better results in the district panchayats winning four of the six seats for which the by-elections were held including winning one seat from the BJP and retaining the three seats it held earlier. The BJP, however, also retained the remaining two seats.
