SRINAGAR: The police have registered a case against an army unit based at Trehgam in the border district Kupwara for beating up a police party, which went to Dardpora village for searches on Saturday. Sources told The Hindu that the policemen, attached to the Trehgam station, were "ruthlessly" beaten by the troops from 14 Grenediers, who questioned their presence. Four policemen were injured and treated in hospital. On the directions of Senior Superintendent of Police Kupwara Vijay Kumar, the police went to the village on information by the locals that suspicious material resembling an explosive was found on their land. Though the area falls under the Trehgam police station, the troops surrounded the policemen, the sources said. Mr. Kumar said a first information report under the Ranbir Penal Code was registered at the Trehgam station. Major R.K. Nathani and other personnel were named in the FIR. When contacted, Defence spokesman A.K. Mathur said, "I am not aware of the incident. I will check the facts and get back to you".
