Breach in pipeline to affect water supply

Staff Correspondent

The problem is expected to be set right in two days

SETTING IT RIGHT: Workers repairing the damaged main Malaprabha water supply line in Hubli on Tuesday.

HUBLI: Water supply in some parts of Hubli is likely to be affected over the next two days following a breach in the main water supply line that originates from Aminbhavi near Dharwad.

According to the Karnataka Water Supply and Drainage Board (KWSDB) sources, the breach in the pipeline was noticed by the staff at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday at Bhairidevarakoppa in Hubli.

They immediately alerted the staff at the Water Purification Unit at Amminabhavi near Dharwad, who in turn stopped the pumping of the water.

Larsen and Toubro Ltd., which had been entrusted with the work of maintenance of the main pipeline has begun the repair work, they said.

K.P. Jayaram Executive Engineer (Maintenance) of KWSSB, Hubli, told The Hindu that the main pipeline was an old one and the pressure had resulted in breaches at joints. He was hopeful that the repair work would be completed by Tuesday night.

He said the water in some parts of Hubli, especially Vidyanagar and surrounding areas, would be affected in the next two days.

However, he clarified that the breach in the main pipeline would not cause any serious disruption in water supply, as two alternative pipelines from Dharwad were available.

Problem

Mr. Jayaram admitted that there was some problem in the water supply of late owing to erratic power supply in the Malaprabha Reservoir area in Savadatti taluk of Belgaum district, from where water is pumped to Amminabhavi unit. Areas in the twin cities, which used to get water once in four days, started getting water once in six days. After the talks with the senior officials of Hubli Electricity Supply Company (HESCOM), the power supply problem has been solved. The water supply would be streamlined again in two to three weeks, he said.
