CITU demands minimum wages for beedi workers

MANGALORE: Common minimum wages should be fixed for beedi workers throughout the country, V.J.K. Nayar, vice-president, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), said at a convention of beedi workers held here on Tuesday.

At present, there was disparity in the wages paid to beedi workers in different parts of the country.

To correct the situation, national common minimum wages should be introduced, he said. Nearly 2 crore people depend on the beedi industry. Nearly 60 lakh persons were involved in rolling beedis, said Mr. Nayar.

Although several measures such as housing schemes and scholarships for children were available for beedi workers, there were several irregularities in providing the same, he said.

B.Madhava, CITU State unit president, said a false propaganda was being carried on that paying arrears would cause severe loss to beedi companies.
