BANGALORE: "Sir, kindly remove SDMCs. They are troubling us like anything." This, says Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti, is an SMS he has received from a woman teacher. The Minister says he has been receiving many such messages and calls from teachers complaining of harassment by SDMC members, pointing out that the case of T. Prema is not a one-off incident. "About 52 per cent of teachers in Karnataka are women. So we need to put in place a system that ensures that they are not harassed," says Mr. Horatti while admitting that the Government has no powers to dismantle SDMCs. The department plans to send circulars to all districts to ensure that women teachers are not harassed. "Some SDMCs are doing well, but there is too much politicking in others," he adds.
