Suggestion comes up at meeting of coastal MLAs held in Hyderabad
|
Concern over lack of roads in habitations along coastal area Separate supervision of Budameru Diversion Project suggested
HYDERABAD:
Constitution of a State-level disaster management authority on the lines of the national-level Disaster Management Committee (DMC) for better management of hazards arising out of natural calamities was suggested at a meeting of coastal MLAs here on Tuesday.
The meeting was organised by the Disaster Management Commissioner at the Assembly on Tuesday and was chaired by the member of the committee, Marri Sashidhar Reddy. The meeting noted with alarm that nearly 240 habitations along the coastal area with population of less than 500 each had no worthwhile roads or shelters.
Dr. Sashidhar Reddy said as none of these habitations came under the purview of either Bharat Nirman or other programmes, the State Government could get them included in the disaster management programme for which the World Bank had agreed to give an assistance of $ 300 million.
Referring to Budameru Diversion Project at Vijayawada, Dr.Sashidhar Reddy said it should be taken up separately instead of including it in the other programmes because of its importance.
