HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has appealed to the agitating teachers affiliated to the Joint Action Committee of Teachers' Organisations to call off their stir and take up SSC spot valuation work in the interests of students. Replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to Governor's address in the Legislative Council on Tuesday, the Chief Minister termed it improper on the part of the teachers to boycott works at this juncture when lakhs of students and their parents were eagerly awaiting results. The Government was prepared to solve the problems and the employees should understand that solution could not be found overnight.
The real figures
Recalling the discussions he had with the teachers' representatives on Monday, he said while they claimed that the financial implication of their demands amounted to Rs. 32 crore, it was in fact working out to more than Rs. 40 crores. "The Government has its own limitations," he said.
CPI(M)'s demand
Meanwhile, the CPI(M) State committee has urged the Government to give up its `adamant' attitude and initiate discussions with the teachers. B.V.Raghavulu, party secretary, said that teachers were boycotting spot valuation to press their `justified' demands. He criticised the Education Department for pressing into service retired teachers and `vidya' volunteers for spot valuation work. He also took objection to Dr. Reddy's remark that teachers were resorting to blackmail.
