Water pipes leak at 38 places: Mayor pulls up DE

Staff Reporter

Farmers diverting water to their agricultural fields

KADAPA: Mayor P. Ravindranath Reddy pulled up Kadapa Municipal Corporation DE Adinarayana on Tuesday for `improper' supervision of the main drinking water pipelines, after detecting leakages and pilferage of water at 38 places at Gandi water works.

The Mayor inspected the water pipelines at Bandikanuma, Lingampalle and Gandi water works to gauge the water supply position. While the pipelines leaked at some places, farmers had broken pipelines near air valves and were diverting water to their agricultural fields, by fixing pipes unauthorisedly at few places. Water wastage was estimated to be around 15 to 20 lakh litres per day, the Mayor said.

Tractor seized

Mr. Ravindranath Reddy ordered seizure of a tractor which was illegally lifting sand from Gandi water works area, where sand quarrying was prohibited. He promised 24-hour water supply all over Kadapa city within the next four to five months, as promised before municipal elections. As against the demand for supply of 11.27 million litres per day (MLD) supply, only 10 MLD of water was being received.

He directed posting of security personnel all along the main drinking water pipelines to curb pilferage of water and plugging off of all breaches within four days.

The Mayor announced constitution of a Task Force Committee with two DEs and four AEs. Four new borewells would be sunk and a third pipeline laid from Lingampalle reservoir, he said. The reservoir was supplying 18 MLD of water as against the capacity of 19.25 MLD. Water was being transported to Chemmumiyapet and Akkayapalle, he said and promised augmentation of supply soon. Tenders called for underground drainage system would be opened on May 3, he said. Municipal Commissioner S. Aleem Basha, engineers and corporators participated.
