BELLARY: The City Municipal Corporation has sought the cooperation of citizens for management and disposal of solid waste in Bellary. As per the decision of the Government, the work of collecting garbage from houses and commercial establishments has been entrusted to Stree Shakti and other women's self-help groups. Municipal Commissioner S.H. Choudhary, in a press release, said that the cooperation of the people was essential for maintaining cleanliness. He appealed to the citizens to hand over garbage to these groups and to avoid dumping garbage in drains or on the roads. He requested them to pay the monthly service charges fixed by the corporation to these groups, failing which a fine of Rs. 200 would be levied. According to him, the corporation does not pay salary to the garbage collectors and the self-help groups but provides equipment and vehicles for collecting the garbage. The service charges fixed by the corporation are as follows: Rs. 20 for houses, Rs. 30 for commercial buildings not exceeding 1,000 sq. ft, Rs. 75 for commercial buildings exceeding 1,000 sq. ft, Rs. 250 for industries not exceeding 1,000 sq. ft, Rs. 500 for industries beyond 1,000 sq. ft and Rs. 100 for hotels. People have also been requested to register their complaints, if any, against the self-help groups with the Municipal Commissioner.
