RIGHT BEGINNING: Siri Gauri, Probationary Deputy Superintendent of Police, inaugurating the training programme for anganwadi workers in Hassan on Tuesday.
HASSAN: Panduranga H. Rane, Superintendent of Police, has lauded the role being played by women's self-help groups (SHGs) in the State. The Government had banned the sale of arrack and lotteries because of their efforts, he said. He was addressing a training programme for anganwadi workers on enrolling members of cooperative societies for the Yeshasvini health insurance scheme here on Tuesday.
Joint development
Stree Shakti groups and self-help groups should jointly work for the development of society. They should encourage people in rural areas to become members of cooperative societies and register themselves for the health insurance scheme, he said. The training programme was jointly organised by the Cooperation Department, Hassan District Central Cooperative Bank (HDCC), District Cooperative Union and Department of Women and Child Development. K.S. Himavantha Gopal, Joint Registrar of Cooperatives of Mysore region, said the Yeshasvini scheme was for members of cooperative societies. Now the scheme has been extended to their family members also. It was started in the State in 1983. They should open a bank account in a cooperative bank or in an agricultural cooperative society.
Loans cleared
He lauded 11,000 SHGs in Hassan district for clearing 99 per cent of the loans taken by them. He advised people particularly in rural areas to be conscious about their health and advised anganwadi workers to educate rural people about the scheme. Shivaram Patel, president of HDCC bank; Yogeshappa, vice-president of the bank; K.P. Thammaiah, Additional Superintendent of Police; Siri Gauri, Probationary Deputy Superintendent of Police; and Govinda Gowda, Deputy Director, Department of Women and Child Development, were present.
