Arrested

CHIKMAGALUR: The police have arrested Ravikumar, a supervisor in a plantation near here, on charge of murdering his wife on March 23 and burying the body near his residence.

Relatives of the deceased lodged a complaint with the police after she was suddenly reported missing. The accused, who was married for nine years, is said to have confessed to the crime while being interrogated by the police. A case has been registered. — Correspondent

Protest

CHIKMAGALUR: Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest in Kadur on Monday to protest against the apathy of the authorities in providing drinking water to the residents of the town. They took out a procession, staged a dharna in front of the municipal offices and presented a memorandum stating that there were irregularities in the supply of water through tankers. They criticised elected representatives for not finding a permanent solution to the drinking water problems in the drought-prone Kadur taluk. They have threatened to intensify their agitation if steps are not taken to set right the problem. — Correspondent

Jain muni welcomed

SHIMOGA: A rousing reception was accorded to Tarun Sagar Muni Maharaj, a Jain seer, when he arrived here on Tuesday on a five-day visit. He was received with the "Poorna Kumbha Kalash" when he did the "Mangal Pravesh" at the Ramanna Shresthi Park. A large number of followers were present to receive the Jain muni.

Nagar, for irregular supply of foodgrains under public distribution system and unpleasant behaviour with consumers. Bandh, yatra on the same day

GULBARGA: Gulbarga is all set to witness two events on Wednesday, including a bandh called by the district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in protest against the alleged failure of the authorities to maintain a regular drinking water supply in the city and the Vikas Yatra of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, State party president Sadananda Gowda and BJP Ministers in the State Cabinet would be participating in the yatra. — Special Correspondent

Contract job

MYSORE: The Department of Horticulture (Mysore) has invited applications from eligible candidates to work as assistants on contract basis. Those who have completed courses in Horticulture, PU, JoC or equivalent examinations may apply.

Ban orders around Vidhana Soudha

BANGALORE: Ban orders under Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code will be in force in a radius of one km from the Vidhana Soudha from 6 a.m. on April 10 to the midnight of April 13.

Bangalore Police Commissioner Neelam Achuta Rao has imposed the prohibitory orders in view of the ongoing legislature session, an official press release said. — Staff Reporter

CITU workshop

MANGALORE: The State Contract Labour Advisory Board set up by the Karnataka Government in 2005 for a period of three years has not met even once in the last two years. Though there were over three lakh contract workers in the State, most of them in ready mix concrete plants, the State Government was not doing enough to ensure their welfare, V.J.K.Nayar, Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) vice-president said here on Tuesday.

The CITU will conduct a workshop of contract workers and their leaders in Bangalore in the last week of April, he said.

Two officials trapped by Lokayukta

BANGALORE: Two officials of the Karnataka Scheduled Tribe Development Corporation were trapped by Lokayukta police while they were allegedly accepting bribe of Rs. 4,800 for releasing a cheque to a contractor.

Office supervisor Latha and District Manager Deve Gowda allegedly demanded Rs. 4,200 and Rs. 600 from the contractor Y.M. Muniraju for issuing cheque for Rs. 70,235.

Muniraju filed a complaint with the Lokayukta police.

The police arrested the two and registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act. — Staff Reporter

28 candidates debarred

BANGALORE: Twenty-eight candidates were debarred for malpractices during the II pre-university examinations for Biology Part-II and Mathematics papers across the State on Tuesday. Of the debarred candidates, 10 were from Bijapur, eight from Gulbarga, four from Tumkur, three from Bidar and one each from Hassan, Mandya and Koppal, a release from the PU Department said. — Staff Reporter
