GULBARGA: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the State Government on a complaint filed by the Karnataka State Daily Wages Employees' Association. It has been asked to file a reply within four weeks. The commission in its notice dated March 22 to the Chief Secretary, based on a petition filed by president of the association Chandrashekar Hiremath, said that the allegations made raised the question of exploitation of labour. The petition said that the daily wage employees in the Horticulture Department for the past 20 years were being paid only Rs. 990 per month and the repeated pleas to the Government to raise their salary had gone unheeded. The NHRC has also sent a copy of the petition submitted by the association to the Chief Secretary and Secretary (Labour). Releasing the order issued by the NHRC at a press conference, Mr. Hiremath said the 22 Horticulture Department employees were appointed in 1985 at a monthly wage of Rs. 150 and in 2000 the wages were increased to Rs. 990. Most of these workers had crossed 50 years and that they had been denied the minimum wages fixed by the Government.
