BANGALORE: In the wake of protests from farmers over acquiring land for special economic zones (SEZs), Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Tuesday said the State Government would hold consultation with farmers and local people before acquiring land. Addressing presspersons after presiding over a meeting of the Industries Department here, Mr. Kumaraswamy said a private firm had made a presentation on the setting up of a multi-purpose SEZ at Nandagudi in Hoskote taluk of Bangalore Rural district. But the Government had not taken a decision on the proposal. The Government would hold meetings with farmers and local people on issues related to fixing price and acquisition of land, he said. Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Govind M. Karjol, officials of Industries Department, Karnataka Udyog Mitra and Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board attended the meeting. Asked about curtailing powers given to school development and monitoring committees (SDMC), he said Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj Horatti would call a meeting soon to decide on the issue. With regard to the death of T. Prema, headmistress of Venkatapur in Mundargi taluk of Gadag district, the Chief Minister said he had instructed the officials concerned to submit a detailed report on the cause of death of the teacher. Prema committed suicide fed up with the alleged harassment by an SDMC member.
