DEMANDING WATER SUPPLY: Members of the Bijapur Drinking Water Action Committee staging a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Bijapur on Tuesday.
BIJAPUR: Members of the Bijapur Drinking Water Action Committee on Tuesday launched an indefinite dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here demanding a regular water supply to all residents in the city. Committee president Ravi Y. Valyapur said that the city was facing an acute drinking water shortage. Citizens were lucky if they got water even once in 10 days. Many localities were getting water supply only once in 15 days. Mr. Valyapur said the municipality should explore the possibility of laying an additional pipeline from the Krishna river to the city, as Bijapur's population was growing at an alarming rate and the city was experiencing rapid growth too. He alleged that the municipal council had become a centre of corruption and that funds meant for development work were being misused. Cases of the siphoning of such funds through submission of bogus bills had come to light, and such issues had been raised quite often at the council's general body meeting, he said. The people's hopes of a probe into the corruption charges had been raised after Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin had taken over charge as ex-officio president of the municipality. However, their hopes had been belied, as nothing had been done to bring the "guilty" officials to book, he said.
