GULBARGA: The Hyderabad-Karnataka Janapara Sangharsha Samithi has threatened to boycott the Gulbarga City Corporation (GCC) elections to be held in May if the Corporation fails to provide basic amenities in the city, including an proper drinking water supply, and to take up development work, including improvement of the underground drainage system, setting up of streetlights in all localities and repair of all poor roads.
`Failure'
President of the Samiti Laxman Dasti told presspersons here on Tuesday that the GCC had failed to implement its promise made frequently to the samithi to ensure a proper drinking water supply to all localities and other basic amenities. He demanded that the Government immediately transfer the responsibility of ensuring a regular drinking water supply from the city corporation to the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB), as the corporation had failed to fulfil its duty. Mr. Dasti said that the KUWSDB, which originally used to take care of both the bulk water supply to the city as well as the supply of drinking water to residents, before the responsibility had been handed over to the GCC, had managed the task well. In Hubli-Dharwad, Mysore and Belgaum, the Government had already transferred the responsibility of ensuring a drinking water supply to the KUWSDB after the respective city corporations had failed to properly manage the task, he said, and added that the same should be done in the case of the Gulbarga City Corporation.
Warning
He also warned that the samithi would be forced to launch a sustained agitation against the GCC immediately if it failed to implement its promises to installing streetlights, repair the underground drainage system and ensure an uninterrupted drinking water supply.
