Man dies

THRISSUR: A member of a group who allegedly consumed surgical spirit mixed with cola at Sree Narayanapuram in Anchangadi, near here, on March 31 died on Tuesday. Umesh, 25, died at Government Medical College here. Balan, 54, of Shanghu Bazaar in Anchangadi, died on April 2. Kondiyara Sadanandan, 46, and Padattu Narayanan, 68, who too allegedly consumed the liquor, are under treatment. — Staff Reporter

Ambedkar Jayanti

KOTTAYAM: The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) will hold its State-wide 117th Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations here on Saturday. The celebrations will comprise a public rally and a meeting. Activists from the seven southern districts will converge here to participate, BSP district president A.P. Jayaprakash said. Party State president Saji K. Cheramar will inaugurate. — Staff Reporter

Traders distribute aid

KOZHIKODE: Representatives of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti on Monday visited the families of the students, Mithunlal and Vipin, and the firecracker shop owner, Appukutty, who were killed in the fire that broke out in the city last week. They also distributed Rs.10,000 each to the families. P.M.A.Salam, MLA, distributed the relief measure. They also decided to give assistance to others killed in the fire. Samiti State president T. Nazirudeen and Kozhikode district committee president K. Hassan Koya are members who visited the residences of the victims. — Staff Reporter

Temple festival

KOZHIKODE: The 97th `Prathishta dina' maholsavam to symbolise the laying of the foundation stone by Sree Narayana Guru, would be observed at the Sreekanteswara Temple here with various rituals on April 21. The rituals would be conducted from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. — Staff Reporter

Bypoll to local body wards

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The by-election to 25 local body wards in the State will be held on May 9. According to the notification issued by the State Election commission, the nominations will be accepted till April 16 and their scrutiny will take place the next day. The nomination papers can be withdrawn till April 20. The counting will take place on May 10. — Special Correspondent

Date extended

Thiruvananthapuram: The last date for applying for the fellowships of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy has been extended to April 23. The Academy proposes to award five part-time fellowships of one-year duration. Their monetary value is Rs.18,000. Graduates with a flair for writing on cinema can apply. The conditions will be relaxed for applicants who have proven their mettle in the field. - Special Correspondent

Plan for NH picketing

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Nationalist Youth Congress (NYC) will picket the National Highway on April 12 in protest against the anti-people policies of the State Government, president Ibrahimkutty Kallar has said. Mr. Kutty told reporters here on Tuesday that the NYC had demanded the Government to amend the liquor policy, give up the move to raise pension age, announce a youth policy and rectify the anti-people conditions in the ADB loan pact. — Special Correspondent
