KARIMNAGAR : Shocked over the loss of his precious and fully grown paddy fields following the sudden hailstorm and rain on Monday evening, a farmer attempted suicide by consuming pesticide in Gangillapur village of Bejjanki mandal on Tuesday. Reports reaching here said that Sathaiah (45) of Gagillapur village cultivated paddy in about six acres of land and he was hoping to reap a rich harvest. But, his dreams were shattered on Monday evening following sudden hailstorm and rain. Villagers shifted him to the Government Headquarters Hospital in Karimnagar where he is undergoing treatment and is stated to be critical. Sattaiah had invested about Rs 40,000 for cultivating paddy in his fields. He was hoping for a bumper harvest of around Rs. 1 lakh and planning to repay all his pending loans. Meanwhile, several hundreds of farmers of Gagillapur village and other mandals staged a rasta roko on the busy Rajiv Rahadhari demanding suitable compensation to all farmers who have lost their crops in the hailstorm. It is estimated that crops in over 4,000 acres were lost in Bejjanki, Koheda, Chigurumamidi mandals. TRS legislator Etala Rajender, BJP Kisan Morcha State president P. Sugunakar Rao and others visited the affected villages.
