Urban local body elections on May 13
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE:
The State Election Commission has announced that elections to urban local bodies, including six city corporations, will be held on May 13.
Announcing the calendar of events for the elections at a press conference here on Tuesday, State Election Commissioner M.R. Hegde said that the model code of conduct had come into effect and the Government should not announce development programmes or relief measures till May 16 when the election process would be completed, he said.
The six corporations going to polls are Hubli-Dharwad, Gulbarga, Davangere, Bellary, Mysore and Belgaum. Of the 207 urban local bodies, 44 are city municipal councils, 93 are town municipal councils and 64 are town panchayats.
The date of the election will be notified on April 24, and the last date for filing nominations is May 2. Scrutiny will be held on May 3 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 5. Counting of votes will begin at 8 a.m. at all taluk headquarter towns on May 15. Polling will be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Mr. Hegde said that people would have to cast their votes using ballot papers.
Electronic voting machines could not be used because the Government had not amended the Karnataka Municipalities Act and the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, he said.
