Plea for strong action against attacks on Dalits

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Committee Against Caste Discrimination has represented to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajarasekhara Reddy demanding stringent action against persons who assaulted Dalits recently in Prakasam, Medak and Mahabubnagar districts.

In a representation to Dr. Reddy on Tuesday, committee leaders P. Ramaiah, S. Rajaiah, N. Narasimhaiah, MLAs, and G. Ramulu, vice-president, wanted him to direct officials to initiate action against the perpetrators of violence against Dalits. They wanted the administration to provide protection to them.

Caste feuds

Meanwhile,V. Krishna of the University of Hyderabad, K. Babu Rajendra Prasad and J. Krishna Kishore of Jana Vignana Vedika, rationalist N. Innaiah and social activist Chandana Chakravarthy contended that holding of `Dalita Govindam' programme in Dalit areas would harm their interests.

In a statement, they said such a programme would only lead to caste feuds.

The Mala Mahanadu also objected to `Dalita Govindam' programme, saying it amounted to humiliating the Dalits and driving them away from god.

K. Sivaji, president, in a statement recalled that Dalits were already feeling isolated as they did not understand the rituals practised by priests on such occasions.
