BANGALORE: A six-year-old boy died here on Tuesday after being infected with rabies at Agrahara layout in Yelahanka. Hemanth Kumar, son of Basavaraj, an auto driver, and Krishnaveni, was bitten by a dog on his leg on March 25. He was treated at a local clinic but later shifted to Isolation Hospital on Monday morning, where he died. "We were told that since the poison had spread too far, he could not be saved and passed away early this morning," a neighbour S. Parthasarathy told The Hindu . He also alleged that the number of street dogs in the area was quite high and many people had been bitten. "What makes matters worse is that it seems that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike seems to be releasing dogs from other areas to our areas," he claimed. The father of the deceased child Basavaraj was too distraught to speak. BBMP Health Inspector Dr. Ravi Kumar was not available for comment, despite repeated attempts. A BBMP release said nobody has seen the dog that had bit the child and the child had not been administered anti-rabies vaccination. The release said that the Animal Birth Control programme for dogs had not been implemented in the area.
