HYDERABAD: It could have been a repeat of Amberpet manhole incident that claimed a woman bank employee's life in 2005 excepting for the fact that this man was lucky to survive with minor injuries.

It all happened when 30-year-old Syed Baba, a mentally challenged person, was walking along the Ganganagar-Ali Cafe road near Zinda Tilismath factory at Amberpet. Fearing the heavy vehicular traffic on the narrow road, he stepped on to the cement slabs only to fall into the drain as the slab collapsed. "Luckily, there was not enough water in it. Yet it took us nearly two hours to rescue him," said R.K. Babu, a cycle shop owner, who did the rescue act.

"The drain was quite deep and we had to place two ladders to bring him out. He was in a state of shock. I had to enter the drain and push him up on to the road surface," said Mr. Babu. The Ganganagar storm water drain was constructed in 2002 and is nearly six-feet wide and 25 foot deep. MCH Executive Engineer M.V.S.N Murthy assured that an RCC slab with three manholes and a boundary wall will be constructed.
