NEW DELHI: The Delhi Medical Council (DMC) has found the South Delhi-based Vidhyasagar Institute of Mental Heath and Neurosciences (VIMHANS) guilty of medical negligence in a case that led to amputation of the right hand of a woman patient. The patient, Munni Barthwal, a Kendriya Vidyalaya teacher and resident of Lans Downe in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, had filed a police complaint against alleged medical negligence by VIMHANS that led to an inquiry by DMC. Ms. Barthwal was admitted to VIMHANS in November 2004 for treatment of a back problem. She was administered some drug intravenously in the right arm. But she developed thrombophlebitis and her right arm was swollen. The matter got worse as she developed blisters on her arm with discoloration of fingers of the right hand. Stating that all the treatment given to the patient did not help the patient at all, the DMC report said: "As a result of failure to administer adequate corrective measures in time the consequences progressed rapidly and led to amputation". Ms. Barthwal has already filed a case with the State Consumer Forum seeking compensation from the hospital.
