COLOMBO: Thirty-six hours after the Indian mission car was hijacked on the highway to the International Airport here, the Sri Lanka police was struggling to find clues to the whereabouts of the vehicle, the culprits behind the incident and their motives. It is believed that personnel of various agencies of the Sri Lanka Government enquired from the driver, who was released by his captors after five hours of detention at an undisclosed destination on the outskirts of the national capital, on the sequence of events. There have been suggestions from the police in the local media that the vehicle could have been hijacked either by the Tigers or by criminal gangs and the driver was kept in custody until the vehicle reached `uncleared' (area outside the government control) territory. However, observers are wondering if it is possible for any one to drive a vehicle with a diplomatic number plate to an uncleared area in either the east or the north without being challenged by numerous security check points. The nearest uncleared area to Colombo would be approximately 250 km and it takes about six hours to reach.
