DEHGAM (GANDHINAGAR): The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, L.K. Advani, has expressed the confidence that the Election Commission would take a "correct decision" on the demand for de-recognition of the Bharatiya Janata Party on the CD issue. Talking to mediapersons on the sidelines of a "women's convention," convened by the Gujarat Government as part of its "save the girl child" campaign, he said "in case" the Commission gave an "adverse" decision, "we are prepared to face it." The demand for the de-recognition by the Congress and other parties was itself unprecedented. Even if it was "presumed" that some individuals were responsible for the creation of the CD, it did not merit the demand. Claiming that the BJP would register a "massive victory" in Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Advani said he believed the demand for de-recognition of his party emanated from the "fear" of being routed in the elections. Mr. Advani, who presided over the convention, praised the performance of the Narendra Modi administration. If the name of any leader was discussed for "maximum achievements," it would be "undoubtedly that of Mr. Modi," he said. Gujarat, under Mr. Modi, was making all-round progress, and had become the model of development for the other States to follow. He praised the women's empowerment programmes launched by Mr. Modi, and said there was no parallel to the State's "Chiranjeevi" scheme for pregnant mothers and newborn children. Union Textiles Minister Shankarsinh Waghela and Congress MLAs from Dehgam and Gandhinagar, Jagdish Thakore and C.J. Chavda did not attend the function. Mr. Thakore said that in the name of "save the girl child" campaign, the function was converted into a BJP convention at the expense of the State Exchequer. Congress members refused to become a party to this. The Government had not sought their consent, but their names were published in the invitation card only to attract more people, he said.
