BHEL R&D to spend Rs.1,000 cr. by 2012

HYDERABAD:
The Corporate R & D of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, here, has drawn up plans to spend Rs.1, 000 crores by the year 2012.
Its expenditure on the R &D rose from Rs.124 crores in 2004-05 to Rs.238 crores last year, recording a 91 per cent in the last two years. The amount spent in 2005-06 was Rs.149.8 crores, Group General Manager S. K. Goyal told a press conference here on Tuesday. He said that the investment in the R & D at Rs.238 crores was 58 per cent higher than that of the previous year. He stated that the corporate R & D would have a prominent role to play in achieving the goals of the strategic plan, which would not only pave the way towards achieving contemporary technological advantage in the global markets, but also give unlimited possibilities for showcasing the division's cutting edge expertise in many knowledge-driven domains. Mr. Goyal said the division would focus on the power sector keeping in view of increasing demands in the future. It would also work on frontier technologies, including nano technology. He said the focal point of 2006-07 was the establishment of a centre of excellence for surface engineering, which was formally inaugurated on March 27. It would enable BHEL to take up complex research assignments for broadening the scope of surface treatment technologies and for finding applications in a wide range of products and insfrastructural systems.
The BHEL's transmission business group had secured a letter of intent for the supply of a 132 kv/33kv gas insulated sub-station developed indigenously by the corporate R & D for use by Transco here.
