Speaker to take up Balli issue

NEW DELHI: Delhi Assembly Speaker Prem Singh on Wednesday assured the House that he would take up the issue of participation of MLA Harsharan Singh Balli in the proceedings of the House with the Supreme Court.

Mr. Balli, former Delhi Industries and Jail Minister, had been arrested on Tuesday for contempt of court and sent to three months in prison for breaking seals of various establishments that had been targeted under the Court-ordered sealing drive in the Capital.

As soon as the Delhi Assembly Budget Session resumed on Wednesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party legislators led by the Leader of the Opposition, Jagdish Mukhi, raised the issue of Mr. Balli's participation in the House proceedings. Prof. Mukhi said there was a precedent in the past as per which sitting MLAs have the right to attend the proceedings.

Water supply to be affected

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Jal Board has announced that there will be no water supply on Thursday evening in Pitampura and adjoining areas, Shalimar Bagh, Shalimar village, Haiderpur village and Singalpur village because of repairs being carried out on the Pitampura mains.

Residents of these areas have been advised to store sufficient water. They can call for tankers on 27304656, 27302201 and 27302202.

Cuban Minister to inaugurate gate

NEW DELHI: Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque will inaugurate a newly constructed gate of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Jamia Millia Islamia here on Thursday.

Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Hasan, the National Committee of Solidarity with Cuba and the Cuban Embassy in New Delhi have organised a friendship meeting on the occasion of the Minister's visit.

"Railway Week" every year now

NEW DELHI: To commemorate the first train run in the country, the Indian Railways organise "Railway Week" every year. At the annual function organised at Kamani Auditorium here on Wednesday, 111 railway employees were felicitated for their meritorious service. Five divisions of Northern Railway -- Delhi, Ambala, Moradabad, Ferozepur and Lucknow -- vied with the each other to bag awards and shields for performance in various categories. The best division shield for showing maximum improvement was bagged by Ambala division, while Lucknow was adjudged the best division for overall performance in all fields.
