RWAs to oppose power tariff hike move

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Faced with the prospect of an increase in power rates, residents' welfare associations in East Delhi have said that they will oppose any such move by the power distribution company and the Delhi Government.

BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), which supplies power to East Delhi, has hinted at a possible increase in the power rates.

Upset by the impending hike, the Resident Welfare Associations have raised questions over the basis on which the discom has based its estimation.

"Why should East Delhi residents pay more than the residents in other parts of the Capital? This is yet another assault on the rights of citizens to a decent life in a city. Now an honest man will have to pay more and suffer power cuts simply because his house is in East Delhi!" said Raj Kishore Dimri of Mayur Vihar Phase III Residents' Welfare Association.

Mayur Vihar is listed as one of the areas where losses are over 50 per cent.

"The consumers under another discom, NDPL, have no problem. A reign of terror has been unleashed by BYPL on the residents of East Delhi. Its contract should immediately be terminated. In the past five years of privatisation, nothing has improved, power cuts have come to stay, faulty meters are part of life and now honest consumers are being implicated for power theft," said Mr. Rajesh Doikhwal, Convenor of the United Residents' Joint Action (URJA) East Delhi.

Krishna Nagar RWA secretary B. S. Talwar said: "Five years ago we had welcomed privatisation expecting better results. Unfortunately power situation as well as consumer problems have increased, particularly in BSES Yamuna areas where more that 15,000 power-related consumer complaints are still pending."
