Compensation raised for loss of tenement in fire: CM

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday announced in the State Assembly that her Government has decided to increase the compensation amount for those whose tenements get gutted in fires from Rs. 1,000 at present to Rs. 2,000.

Responding to a special mention by Bawana MLA Surender Kumar seeking enhancement of the compensation to those who lose the roof over their head and all their personal belongings in fires, Ms. Dikshit said the sum of Rs 1,000 was too meagre to provide any immediate relief and she had therefore decided to increase it to Rs 2,000.

"The Delhi Government has a system in place whereby in the event of a fire the area Sub-Divisional Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner rush to the site and immediately arrange for distribution of compensation amount along with clothes and blankets,'' Ms. Dikshit said.

However, while this was only a temporary measure, she said, the Union Government and the Delhi Government had now decided to take up in situ development of slum clusters. Under this scheme, land has been identified for development of over 10,000 dwelling units in high-rise buildings.

These would be given out to the slum dwellers livng in these areas and they will also be provided loans at concessional rates and for long durations so that they are able to make their contribution towards the tenement with ease, the Chief Minister said.

Earlier, Mr. Kumar had said the fire that ravaged a slum cluster in Bawana on Wednesday morning had left many without any of their personal belonging.

"Barring the clothes on their bodies, people have lost everything,'' he said, adding that people in the area did not even have utensils to accept the food which was being brought in by people coming in to help them.
