Declaration: Lokayukta gives more time to legislators

Staff Reporter

  • Many legislators have not filed declarations in the proper format
  • Shivakumar found to have not given the assets and liabilities of his family members

BANGALORE: Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde has given time till April 21 for legislators who have not submitted their annual declaration of assets and liabilities in a proper format before he takes further action.

"I had second thoughts on the statement made by me in Davangere on Tuesday. I do not want to release the list of legislators before giving them reasonable time," Mr. Hegde told The Hindu Wednesday.

Each legislator has been sent the list through the secretaries of the two Houses of legislature.

The list indicates the columns that have not been filled and details that have not been given.

The fact that the legislators were not filing their declarations in a proper format was discovered while seeing the way six legislators, who had failed to do so within the deadline, submitted their statements.

The legislators have left some columns blank, while others had marked with a full stop or a dash.

In the case of Congress MLA D. K. Shivakumar he was found to have not given the assets and liabilities of his family members.

The Lokayukta gave some time to the six legislators to submit the details in the required format.

This made the Lokayukta scrutinise the statements of the other legislators. This revealed that as many as 109 MLAs and 32 MLCs had not given information in the required format.

Section 22 of the Karnataka Lokayukta Act makes it mandatory for all public servants to file their yearly declarations in Form No. 4 before the Lokayukta.
