Keeping in mind the employment opportunities for professionally qualified physiotherapists in India and abroad, Jamia Millia Islamia recently set up a Centre for Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Science that will offer a four-and-a-half-year course in Bachelor of Physiotherapy from the new academic year. Approved by the University Grants Commission under the Tenth Plan (special grant) for staff, equipment and information, the Centre endeavours to prepare highly skilled professionals with thorough knowledge of theoretical and practical aspects in the light of the recent developments in the field of biotechnology and bio-medical science. The course will have 40 seats and those who have secured 50 per cent aggregate in physics, chemistry and biology will be eligible for admission. The duration of the course is four years, followed by a six-month internship. The last date for submission of application forms is June 15 and the entrance examination will be held on June 20. The mode of admission will comprise a written test (85 per cent) and interview (15 per cent). Aiming at those aspiring to take up techno-managerial roles and other positions in the construction industry, Ansal Institute of Technology, Gurgaon, has introduced a postgraduate programme in construction management in collaboration with the real estate company Ansal API. For engineers, the programme is for one year with nine months of academic training and three months of paid internship in the industry, while for diploma holders the duration will be two years with 18 months of academic training and a six-month internship. "Indian youth need to come forward and take full advantage of this opportunity knocking at the door of the construction sector which is one of the fastest growing sectors in our economy. The future prospects are extremely bright for professionals in this field," said AIT Director M. P. Singh. Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Chaman Lal is leaving for Lahore on Thursday to participate in a seminar on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The seminar, on the theme "Dr. Ambedkar: An Ambassador of Humanity", is being organised by the Gangaram Foundation and Prof. Lal, who teaches at the Centre for Indian Languages at JNU, will present a paper this Saturday. "All these efforts will go a long way in building a common bridge between peoples of the two countries. Events like the First War of Independence of 1857 and personalities like Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh are common links between India and Pakistan that should be utilised to promote amity and goodwill," he said.
Delhi University's Institute of Economic Growth has organised a national seminar on "Expanding Freedom: Towards Social and Economic Transformation in a Globalising World" at its institute premises here. The well-known paradigm shifts in economic policy since the early 1990s have had repercussions beyond developmental goals. The seminar seeks to examine how these repercussions have played out across a range of fields such as health, natural and urban environments, livelihood, common property resources and land rights and the struggles for justice. It will explore how the ensuing complex scenarios mesh with the stated national and developmental goals of expanding economic freedom and the vision of democratic governance," said Institute Director Kanchan Chopra. Well-known economists like Kaushik Basu of Cornell University and Ashwini Saith, Dean of Rural Economics Institute of Social Studies in The Netherlands, are participating in the three-day event that ends on Friday.
