Biotic awards to be presented today

KOLLAM: The Thevalapuram M. Bhaskaran Pillai Memorial Biotic Awards will be presented to film actor Rajan P. Dev and president of the Kollam District Library Council Puthur Somarajan at a function at Thevalapuram on Thursday. Thengamam Balakrishnan, former editor of Janayugam, will present the awards. Mr. Balakrishnan who turned 80 on April 1 will be honoured on the occasion. A.V. Thamarakshan, former MLA, will also be honoured. The Bhaskaran Pillai commemoration address will be delivered by S. Jagannatha Pillai, Kottarakara taluk union president of the Nair Service Society. Film actor Mukesh will be the chief guest at the function. — Staff Reporter

Two killed in accident

Kozhikode: Two persons were killed and two sustained injuries when a jeep they were travelling in rammed a trailer carrying pipes on the Thondyad-Ramanattukkara bypass here early on Wednesday. The desd were identified as K.A. Kunhammed, 30, son of Moideen, and Abdul Rahim, 22, son of Mammed. Both hailed from Vadakara in the district.

Entries invited

KOZHIKODE: Entries have been invited for the Poorna Uroob award instituted by Poorna Publications. The award is instituted with a view to encouraging up -and-coming writers. Entries of novel and short stories from students will be considered for the award. A cash prize of Rs.10,000 and certificate would be awarded to the best novel. The second prize carries Rs.5,000 and certificate. Entries of novels and short stories should be handwritten, on one side of the paper. — Staff Reporter

Two of the injured, Abdulla, 28, and Noushad, 28, were admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Later, they were discharged from the hospital. Hike in pension for coir workers sought

KOZHIKODE: M.M. Sasidharan, president of the Kozhikode block panchayat, has demanded an increase in the sum paid as pension to workers in the coir sector. At present, a sum of Rs.100 is paid a month as pension to the workers. — Staff Reporter

Official engagements cancelled

Thiruvananthapuram: All official engagements of Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan till April 15 have been cancelled owing to his indisposition. He has been advised rest by the doctors. K.G. George is KSFDC chairman

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has appointed director K.G. George as chairman of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation. Actor Sona Nair is the vice-chairman. The director board comprises Innocent, K.S. Chitra, Kaviyoor Ponnamma, Harikumar (director), Balu Kiriyath (director), K.G. Jayan (cameraman), Vinayan (director), N.Krishna Kumar (producer), Ambili (director), P.K. Gopan, N.C. Spirit seized

Coimbatore: Rectified spirit valued at Rs.4.5 lakh has been seized from a van at Malumichampatti on the city outskirts, the police said. According to sources, the spirit was being smuggled to Kerala. The seizure was made early Wednesday during a vehicle check in the area. The van had 84 cans, each containing 35 litres of rectified spirit. The driver and another person in the vehicle have been arrested. — PTI

Mata returns from Mauritius

NEDUMBASSERY: Mata Amritanandamayi returned here to Kochi on Wednesday morning after her tour. She arrived at the Cochin International Airport by a Jet Airways flight from Mumbai. She left for Amritapuri ashram at Vallikavu. During the tour which lasted for over two months, the Mata visited several places, including Bangalore, Mysore, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Delhi. From Delhi, she left on a nine-day tour to Mauritius. — A Correspondent

SBT hikes BPLR

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Bank of Travancore (SBT) increased its benchmark prime lending rate (BPLR) from 12.5 per cent to 13 per cent with effect from April 9. The bank has hiked lending rates across the board, according to a press release. - Special Correspondent

Panel appointed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has appointed a two- member commission to look into the complaints against the Wakf Board. Local Self-Government Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty, who is also in charge of Wakf, said here on Wednesday that they were the former District Judge M.A.Nissar and the former Joint Secretary to the Government Y.Ashrafuddin. - Special Correspondent
