Organisations sign MoU to address HIV problem

More doctors to get hands-on training in treating HIV/AIDS

CHENNAI : Though hundreds of healthcare workers have been trained in taking care of people with HIV/AIDS, quite a few practitioners still hesitate to treat the disease. The Tamilnadu AIDS Initiative-Voluntary Health Services (TAI/VHS) and Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University will jointly train doctors with the aim of addressing this problem.

The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday (MoU) to train about 50 doctors. The Department of Experimental Medicine and AIDS Research Centre of the university will conduct training with financial support from the TAI.

The three-day residential training programme will include lectures and hands-on experience at the Namakkal district headquarters hospital. The course will prioritise HIV/AIDS, opportunistic infections management, anti-retroviral therapy and associated issues and counselling.

The success of an earlier training programme, under which the department had trained over 210 doctors from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, had encouraged the university to renew its efforts, said Vice-Chancellor K. Meer Mustafa Hussain, a signatory to the MoU.

N.S. Murali, VHS secretary, said the hospital's initiatives were aimed at carrying forward the founder's dream of preventive healthcare.
