U.S. city San Antonio's offer to Chennai
Staff Reporter
Chennai:
The Government of San Antonio, a city in the southwest of the U.S., has expressed interest in a `sister city' partnership with Chennai to promote cultural and economic ties. Sister Cities International is a diplomacy network for partnerships between cities in the U.S. and cities in other countries at the municipal-level.
San Antonio, the second largest city in Texas, has a small but close-knit Indian community. On Wednesday, an official delegation from San Antonio met Chennai Mayor M. Subramanian and Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni. The team included San Antonio councillor Richard Perez; Director of International Affairs Elizabeth Costello, International Affairs Specialist Carmen Dias, Indian Sister City Project Task Force Chairperson Kaushalya Subramaniam and business community representative Jay Madhani.
The officials of both cities have decided to set up working groups to identify areas of cooperation. San Antonio has sister cities in Mexico, Japan, Spain, Taiwan and South Korea. It has partnership programmes in the fields of arts, education, business, sport, municipal training, technology and research.
