CHENNAI: Urban development projects will be taken up at a cost of about Rs. 3,500 crore for integrated development of cities and their neighbourhood in the State, under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and Urban Infrastructure Development for Small and Medium Towns (UDISSMT). Of the three urban agglomerations chosen for the scheme Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore Madurai has prepared a city development plan for Rs. 2,458 crore and Coimbatore for Rs. 3,186 crore, Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin informed the Assembly on Wednesday. Apart from this, city development plans have been prepared for Tirunelveli, Cuddalore, Namakkal, Tiruchengode, Kodaikanal, Nagercoil, Sivakasi, Rajapalayam, Kovilpatti, Karaikudi, Alandur, Pallavaram and Tambaram. For 31 municipal towns, city development plans will be prepared in 2007-08, Mr. Stalin said. The Government planned to create such plans for all first and second grade municipalities through the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited. The Centre has approved six projects involving a total expenditure of Rs.331.61 crore for implementing water supply and solid waste management schemes under JNNURM. Of this, three major projects in Madurai, Coimbatore and Namakkal cost Rs.174.38 crore. It has also sanctioned another 19 projects costing Rs.829.32 crore for providing basic amenities to the urban poor.
Water supply schemes
Water supply is set to improve in the near future in suburban Tambaram once the Rs.32.6 crore scheme is implemented. Coimbatore has the highest outlay of the four water schemes approved under JNNURM Rs.113.74 crore. This is for the implementation of the second Pillur Water Supply scheme. Water supply projects worth Rs.28.41 crore have been approved in six towns Villupuram, Maraimalai Nagar, Karur, Thanjavur, Erode, Devakottai/Sivaganga. In 2006-07, water supply schemes in 10 Municipalities Tiruttani, Arakkonam, Tirupattur, Namakkal, Gudalur (the Nilgiris), Palladam, Valparai, Vickramasingapuram, Srivilliputhur and Aranthangi have been taken up at a cost of Rs.81.62 crore. Mr. Stalin said the Government was committed to implementing underground drainage schemes in all Municipal towns in a phased manner. Such schemes were taken up in all but five district headquarters towns in 2006-07. Administrative sanction would be given to take up the work in the remaining five municipalities Theni, Tiruvallur, Perambalur, Nagapattinam and Nagercoil this year, he added. In addition to this, administrative sanction had been accorded to take up underground drainage work in 10 more municipalities Komarapalayam, Rasipuram, Chinnamanur, Paramakudi, Sankarankoil, Tenkasi, Mettur, Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam and Maraimalai Nagar.
Animal birth control
The Animal Birth Control programme would be implemented for stray dogs in five Corporations and 50 Municipalities.
