Girls outsmart boys in this area also

MADURAI: It was girls all the way at the merit scholarship disbursement function at Madurai Kamaraj University on Wednesday, when cheques for Government Endowment Scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate students were handed over.

"Out of 347 students who received merit scholarships for the 2006-07 academic year, 268 were girls. Only 79 boys could make it to the final list," said P.M. Ajmal Khan, Dean (Endowment and Development), MKU. The undergraduate students were presented with Maruthu Pandiar Endowment scholarships of Rs.985 each, while the postgraduate students received cheques for Rs.1,300 each under the Maveeran Sundaralingam Endowment.

Mr. Ajmal Khan said the fact that more girls figured in the list was ample proof of more women getting into and excelling in higher education.

Vice-ChancellorP. Maruthamuthu, who distributed the cheques, said the scholarships would prove to be an encouragement to the young women. According to university authorities, a special committee had selected the candidates after screening applications from students in all subjects from the university and its affiliated colleges. Totally, Rs.3. 7 lakh was disbursed under both the endowments. The Registrar I. Singaram and Syndicate members R. Murali, I. Ismail and V. Alagappan, spoke.
