NEW DELHI: The Ganguly Committee has recommended starting two multi-disciplinary postgraduate courses in the fields of health facility planning and healthcare engineering and management. The committee, set up in November last year under the chairmanship of N.K. Ganguly, Director-General of Indian Council of Medical Research, to draft and review course structure for full-time and distance education programmes in respect of health facility planning and designing and healthcare engineering and management, submitted its report to the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss here on Thursday. The committee has recommended starting Master's courses in Health Facility Planning and Designing and Healthcare Engineering and Management at the PGI, Chandigarh. The committee has also recommended starting similar courses for mid-career professionals in the state polytechnics and even at the Indian Institute of Technology level. Such training facilities/courses are being developed for the first time in South East Asia and India has the potentiality of becoming a `knowledge hub'. Due to fast changing medical technology hospital buildings require constant changes and hence constant research in designs, building technologies, new materials, space utilization sustainability, green concepts and applications. Efficiently run hospitals will contribute a lot in medical tourism, the committee has suggested. It is hoped that these programmes being the first in South East Asia will also help in certified healthcare manpower export.
