Corrections and Clarifications

In "Grappling with the new realities of U.P." (Editorial page, April 10, 2007), there were errors in the statistics quoted. Sentences in the second paragraph were "In that crucial election [in 2002], the so-called regional parties went mainstream and how — together the SP and the BSP had 241 of 401 seats and their combined vote share was close to 50 per cent. The march of the backwards continued in the 2004 Lok Sabha election — this time the two parties had 57 of 80 seats between them and their combined vote share was a spectacular 60 per cent." The correct position is that in the 2002 Assembly election, the SP and the BSP together had 241 of 403 seats for a vote share of 48.43 per cent. In the 2004 Lok Sabha election, the BSP and the SP (with the latter's allies) together had 57 seats for a vote share of 56 per cent (it was 55.9).

A sentence in "Commentary on a hymn", a review of the Tamil book "Abhiramiyum Lalithavum" ("Book Review" page, April 3, 2007), was: "He enumerates the various epithets of Sakti — Bhairavi, Mandali, Kundali, Malini, Sooli, Varali and so on." It should have been "Varahi".
