Shocking

BJP legislator Harcharan Singh Balli's admission that he broke open the seals of commercial establishments that were sealed at the Supreme Court's order (April 11) because he felt it was his duty as a people's representative sounds ominous. He seems to be inciting people to take the law into their own hands. The BJP must be taught a serious lesson in the Uttar Pradesh polls, even if the Election Commission cannot take serious action against it for propagating hatred based on religion.

Ashok Viswanath,
Chennai

It was shocking to find the BJP MLA taking the law into his own hands knowing full well that his action was in defiance of the court order. He has gone a step further saying he understood the interests of the people better. Such people are a menace to the working of the government and democracy. Anarchy is only the beginning with people of such temperament holding the reins of power.

Amlan Jyoti Ray,
New Delhi

Mr. Balli arrogated to himself the power to decide whether the judiciary was right in ordering the sealing of unauthorised constructions. This is reprehensible. The apex court's powers to determine the legality or otherwise of any executive action or legislation is derived from the Constitution, which all MLAs and MPs pledge to uphold. Contempt of court committed by the MLA deserves to be punished.

N. Hariharan,
Coimbatore
